The Company Origins

Bare & Torrisholme Funeral Services was originally established back in the early 1900s and was first named C.H. Overend Builders & Funeral Directors. Running it – Mr Albert Overend.

Albert was very active, not only in building the company but paying service in everything appertaining to the wellbeing of the borough of Morecambe.

How we became Bare & Torrisholme Funeral Services

From the very start of the company, it has always been based at 5 Bare Lane in what was then the small village of Bare. Over the years, Albert became a business partner with Miss Florence Myers successfully building a strong and well-respected company. After Albert left the company, Harry Peel joined having a family connection to Florence. After a few years running the company together, Florence sadly passed away. Harry’s passion for looking after and caring for people made the decision for him to become the sole proprietor of the company in 1953.

Adapting for the Future

Changes in the village of Bare would mean that the original building had to come down to widen the main road through Bare, so Harry took the opportunity to rebuild the property and create a purpose-built funeral home on the same site.

At the same time, the company of C.H. Overend Builders & Funeral Directors was renamed Bare & Torrisholme Funeral Services.

Modern Day

Still going at the age of 69 years, Harry was not ready for retirement. He became partners with his son, Terry and together they continued to run Bare & Torrisholme Funeral Services making changes to the premises over the years to make what now is a modern, self-contained, independently run funeral home.

Harry played an active role in the company till he finally retired at the age of 90 years, after 25 years of working with his Dad, Terry is very proud to be still running the company and is now in his 28th year as a funeral director.
